Drunk driving. I can't say it surprised me. He's one of the smartest people I know. Almost too smart, to the point of self-destruction.

Don't drink and drive people.

My father- an actual rocket scientist- was the smartest person I'll ever know. He was killed by a drunken asshole, who was, coincidentally, the VP of a beer distributor.

He was on his bicycle, at 05:38am in the fucking morning, on a huge deserted 4-laner. The road was so empty that the asshole actually was going to testify that my father was on the wrong side of the road.

And out of the blue, at the coroner's inquest, an older couple showed up to also be deposed... they testified that they had passed my father numerous times in the morning on that same road, and had never seen him anywhere but on the far right shoulder. In fact, they had passed him just before the accident, and saw it happen, from a distance.

Coincidentally, it was their last time taking that ride; they were retiring from whatever they had been doing, and moving away. They stayed behind to testifty, and though I never met them, I'll always be grateful for their kindness. They could've just kept going...

So yeah, the story never changes, there're assholes, and there are angels. It's a pity we seem to meet them in similar proportions.

EDT- I don't include the snark about the asshole working in the industry that put him behind bars because I'm anti-alcohol; I take a drink, hell I worked as a bartender for a while, many years later. But ferrchrissakes it's a goddamned tranquilizer! If drinking stops you thinking then quit fucking drinking. The end.

EDT2- Godamn it made myself cry... it's been decades, too. C'mon, Life, get going on like you're supposed too...

I'm glad I read this. I'm sorry about your father. I couldn't imagine dealing with something like that. I hope I will never ever be affected by the actions of a drunk driver. I will always do my part to make sure I will never ever be the drunk driver.
